Rainforest Conservation Stop One - Fiji
Giving back is a big part of our sustainable business model. Through Rapanui, we of course aim to make money, but its important to spend it in the right way too. We currently donate 5% of pre-tax profits to environmental charities but sometimes donating feels a bit like ticking a box not knowing, seeing or feeling where your money has gone.
Recently, we decided to get more hands-on with our 5% for the planet scheme. The first part was to hook up with the Marine Conservation Society and take over Grange Chine's Beach Detox. Then we started doing talks at schools about climate change; the satisfaction of hands-on charity got us hooked! So we stepped it up a notch...
We immidiately lined up Joe Coleman, a gap year student short of ideas, and packed him off to Fiji to work on a project restoring areas of depleted rainforest. It was six weeks hard labour in tropical heat and he managed to trash all the gear we gave him, but he came back stoked, with plenty of tales, and a heck of a lot browner than us.
