Rapanui, the Ethical Clothing Company Making a Difference
An ethical clothing company has unveiled a new range of clothing which aims to try to make people think about the environment in their wider lifestyle choices.

The small Isle of Wight based brand have been trading for two years, concentrating on sustainable textiles and buying in clothes that matched a certain ethical ethos. Now they have established these connections the company has turned its attention to ‘making eco fashion cool’ with its new range and new website.
Rapanui was set up by entrepreneurial brothers Rob (25) and Martin Drake-Knight (23) in early 2008 with £200 of savings. It has quickly grown into an award winning brand, earning recognition at Enterprise UK’s Young Brit Awards and the Sustainable Business awards, Rapanui was the youngest company to reach the finals of the Sustainable Business Awards in 2008 and has recently won the sustainable business awards 2010.
Every Rapanui product is made from organic natural fabrics, so their clothes are free from pesticides and artificial fertilisers, in a wind powered factory audited by the Fairwear Foundation. This ensures that every worker gets a fair wage and clean and safe working conditions.
Rapanui’s website also hosts a Wikipedia style resource packed with information about their supply chain, where consumers can find out where clothing comes from, how it is made and ask questions on anything – from the planting of the seed to stacking the products on the shelf.
Director Martin Drake-Knight explains ‘If we can inform and educate people as to where clothing comes from and how it is made they can then make Informed Decisions as shoppers; It’s not that people don’t care it’s just they don’t know’. Rob continues: “We’re all young people ourselves and think it’s only right that people of our age can have access to high street style eco-clothing and in the process can learn a bit about their clothes.”
There is a wealth of information for any interested customer to read through on Rapanui’s website, including a Wikipedia style resource with all the essential knowledge on their Eco-Fashion page, they are completely open and honest about the entire process of their clothes, how they are made and what impact each piece has on the environment, yet at the same time provide garments that perhaps you wouldn’t expect from a company whose main concern is about reducing the environmental impact of the fashion industry.
