Through the Loop
Every year around 1.2 million tonnes of textiles are sent to the landfill in the UK. That’s about 24,000 jumbo jets and only 16% is re-used or recycled! Experts claim that the global fibre consumption is likely to grow from 2010 to 2020 by 30%. This means that just changing the materials into more sustainable would not solve the problem.
We believe that moving to a circular economy could be part of the solution.
Ellen MacArthur Foundation
The basic principle is that waste = food. This closed-loop material use is at the heart of the concept, and a circular economy is at its best when industries collaborate so the waste or a co-product of one becomes an input to another. The ideal is that nothing ends up at the landfill!
Taking back a product in the end of the product lifecycle is a big leap for a company in order to create a circular economy. The product would have to be the highest possible quality and designed for longevity, unlike most high street products, because why would anyone want to see their product quickly come back?
“It really will take one or two consumer-based product companies to do this… And then it will be a domino effect” says Jay Bolus the vice president of MBCD (Sustainable Industries, 2006)
We think that the domino effect has already begun and at the moment new C2C Rapanui products are being developed!
